Pillow Active from Harvest Direct boasts it is the world’s first cold and flu pillow case that will help you sleep as well as make you feel better. Pillow Active Pillow Case claims its secret is it is made of a soft material infused with menthol and eucalyptus oils that will get you through the toughest colds.
How does Pillow Active Pillow Case work to help me with a cold or flu?
Pillow Active says it combines warmth and comfort along with the scent of menthol and eucalyptus oils to help you feel better while you sleep. They tout the soft material is infused with menthol and eucalyptus to help you breathe.

The result, they promise, is you’ll breathe better and sleep more soundly during cold and flu season.

Bottom Line: Is Pillow Active Pillow Case a good way to cure my cold or flu?
No. First of all, in case you don’t remember, there is still no cure for the common cold. Of course, for thousands of years people have used natural remedies from chicken soup to honey and green tea to help ease the stuffiness and congestion.
Menthol and eucalyptus oils are indeed on this list and the mere smell of them may bring back memories – one lady in the infomercial mentions it reminds her of Vicks Vapo Rub – but there is no evidence it can actually shorten or treat a cold or flu. Menthol and eucalyptus can help some people breathe better at least temporarily.
But do you want or need this on a pillow case? Menthol and eucalyptus are not recommended for excessive use during colds. You should not get them in your eyes, lips, nose, or mouth, which will be difficult to avoid if you are tossing and turning on a pillow case. If you have too much exposure you could get nausea and diarrhea, or if exposed to undiluted eucalyptus or menthol it can cause poisoning.
In addition, one of the men in the Active Pillow Case commercial says he would like to have one for his kids but WebMD cautions eucalyptus oil is LIKELY UNSAFE for children under 12.
If you like the smell of menthol or eucalyptus oil and are feeling under the weather, it may help you breathe a little bit easier, at least temporarily. But this is much more effectively and safely delivered in a product like Vick’s – or if you’re feeling crafty you can try this home made vapor rub recipe.
Use eucalyptus or menthol in limited amounts for only a week. If your cold or flu symptoms persist after that, you should see a doctor.
