Mighty Jump Pocket is a portable device that claims to start a dead car battery or give your cellphone more juice in case of an emergency. They boast Mighty Jump Pocket works fast, is powerful enough to start most cars, yet still small enough to fit in a pocket or purse.
How does Mighty Jump Pocket work to give me emergency power?
Mighty Jump Pocket is a silver device whose dimensions are 4"L x 3"W x 1"H weighing 6.4 oz. and containing 2 rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. It also has a micro USB port, a regular USB, and a DC port for starting a car
To use Mighty Jump Pocket, they tell you that you need to charge the device via the micro USB port (a cord is included) for 4-6 hours. Then, when it is done charging, they state Mighty Jump Pocket is ready for action – you can keep in a purse, pocket, or in the glove compartment of your car.
To jumpstart a car, they instruct you to plug Mighty Jump Pocket into your car’s cigarette lighter (now referred to as a DC adapter) via the DC port with the device in the OFF position. Then, turn the ignition to the accessory position (usually ¼ turn): if the light turns green, they state the battery is not defective and can be charged by the Mighty Jump Pocket.
Next, they tell you to test the electrical system by turning on the headlights for 10-15 seconds. If the light on Mighty Jump Pocket stays green, you can continue on to the actual charge. Finally, turn the switch from OFF to DC and wait 10-15 minutes. Afterwards, unplug the Mighty Jump Pocket and turn the ignition without pressing on the gas – they say your dead car will now spring back to life.
Mighty Jump Pocket adds you may use the USB port to charge your electronic devices, but charging times may vary according to the product. They caution you to never charge the device more than 6 hours and to not use it to charge devices while the unit itself is recharging. To recharge Mighty Jump Pocket with your car’s USB input, they tell you wait until the car battery is fully recharged; they add to unplug the device when the car is not running or it could drain your battery.

Bottom Line: Is Mighty Jump Pocket a great portable jumpstart battery for me to buy in case of a roadside emergency?
Probably not. We say this for a couple of reasons. First, and most importantly, are the customer reviews of the device. From what we’ve seen, it averages 3 stars, meaning half the people who bought it say it was great and worked like a charm, and the other half state it didn’t hold a charge or wasn’t powerful enough to turn over their engine. (Some even complain it wasn’t strong enough to charge a cell phone.)
There is a chance that some of the people didn’t use the device correctly as some of the positive reviewers have contended or that their car battery was defective, but the number of negatives makes us think you’ll have a 50/50 chance of it working for you, which isn’t such great odds in an emergency.
We suggest looking at the Ivation Mini Portable Car Jumpstarter or one made by PowerGo that get good reviews for reliability and power. This will cost a little more (around $90) but if you ever need it when you are stranded, the extra money spent will be worth it.
