Made by Guthy-Renker, Lumipearl’s anti-aging product line claims to decrease the appearance of wrinkles, reduce under eye bags and dark spots, and deliver glowing skin.
Lumipearl’s line of anti-aging skincare products promise to deliver 22 different benefits, including reduced line and wrinkle visibility, increased radiance, firmer skin, smoother texture, diminished sun damage and dark marks, and deliver glowing skin.
Lumipearl also tells us that their ProPearl Complex was developed to provide glowing results on all skin types, without using talcs, dyes, mineral oils, or parabens.
What, exactly, is Lumipearl’s ProPearl Complex? Will it provide meaningfully different results than the competition? When it comes down to it, are these products worthy of your hard-earned money?
Here, we’ll discuss what we learned during our research so you can make a more informed, empowered buying decision—starting with Lumipearl’s lineup.
What Products Will You Find In Lumipearl’s Anti-Aging Line?
Overall, there are eight products that bear the Lumipearl brand name (only active ingredients are hyperlinked):
Lumipearl’s Youth Serum is said to contain pearl powder and other ingredients to help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and improve tone and texture. Dermatologist tested and suitable for all skin types.
Water (Aqua), Glycerin, Polysorbate 20, Sea Water (Maris Aqua), BHA, BHT, Phormidium Persicinum Extract, Nacre Protein, Nacre Lipids, Biosaccharide Gum-4, Calcium Carbonate, Retinol, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Mica, Ethylhexylglycerin, Gellan Gum, Propanediol, Citric Acid, Calcium Alginate, Xanthan Gum, Phenoxyethanol, Caprylyl Glycol, Hexylene Glycol, Fragrance (Parfum), Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891)
Most of these ingredients work as moisturizers, conditioners, surfactants, thickening agents, and emulsifiers to soothe skin and help it retain moisture. This is also the case among each of Lumipearl’s other products.
While they might help you look younger if you suffer from especially dry skin, they’re extraordinarily common in many anti-aging products and other creams.
Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) are frequently used as antioxidants, which, like other antioxidants, may help neutralize free radicals and reduce the threat of carcinogens. However, there doesn’t seem to be sufficient clinical evidence linking BHA or BHT with meaningful anti-aging benefits.
Similarly, phormidium persicinum is a type of algae, although we didn’t find any direct clinical evidence linking its topical application with reduced signs of aging.
Nacre, more commonly known as mother of pearl, is an inorganic material that gives pearls their iridescent shine. While this is a common ingredient in some anti-aging formulations, we only found one study from 2006 indicating nacre lipids may help address dry skin.
And as we've learned, a single study doesn't ‘prove' anything. Instead, it takes a large body of double-blind, peer-reviewed, repeatable results.
Retinoids (Retinol included) help reduce signs of aging by boosting skin’s cellular turnover, increasing its thickness and elasticity, slowing the breakdown of collagen, and lightening dark spots. However, effects can vary widely depending on strength, which is not something we’re told about here.
Possible side effects: Although many of these ingredients can cause illness at ultra-high doses, authority websites indicate most of us likely won’t have to worry about anything worse than temporary redness at the application site.
Intense Glow Perfecting Pads
Exfoliating pads that promise to help reduce the appearance of your pores and leave you with a glowing appearance, using the following ingredients:
Water (Aqua), Glycerin, PEG-12 Dimethicone, Glycolic Acid, Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) Water, Sodium Hydroxide, Sea Water (Maris Aqua), Panthenol, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Flower Extract, Anthemis Nobilis (Chamomile) Flower Extract, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Extract, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Phormidium Persicinum Extract, Polysorbate 20, Nacre Protein, Nacre Lipids, Calcium Carbonate, Alcohol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Disodium EDTA, Phenoxyethanol, Fragrance (Parfum)
Again, most of these ingredients work to improve skin and/or product feel, although they probably won’t provide significant anti-aging results unless your skin is especially dry.
Witch hazel is extraordinarily common in topical astringents, since it can help reduce swelling, fight bacteria, and repair broken skin.
Possible side effects: The Cosmetics Database classifies PEG-12 Dimethicone as a moderate hazard for increasing the risk of certain types of cancers. It’s recommended that you avoid applying it to broken or irritated skin.
Line Smoothing Moisture Cream
An ultra-hydrating day and night cream that promises to provide smoother, firmer-looking skin through moisturization. Suitable for all skin types, dermatologist-tested, and paraben-free.
Water (Aqua), Dimethicone, Glycerin, Dimethicone/Vinyl Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Octyldodecanol, Cetyl Alcohol, Hydrogenated Coco-Glycerides, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Sea Water (Maris Aqua), PEG-100 Stearate, Glyceryl Stearate, Stearic Acid, Phormidium Persicinum Extract, Hydrolyzed Jojoba Esters, Magnesium Aluminum Silicate, BHT, Calcium Carbonate, Nacre Protein, Nacre Lipids, Silica, Ethylhexylglycerin, Hexylene Glycol, Caprylyl Glycol, Sodium Hyaluronate, 1,2-Hexanediol, Xanthan Gum, Glycolic Acid, Mica, PEG-75 Stearate, Ceteth-20, Steareth-20, Sodium Hydroxide, Phenoxyethanol, Chlorphenesin, Fragrance (Parfum)
Here again, most of these work as emollients, emulsifiers, moisturizers, thickeners, viscosity enhancers, and other ingredients that improve texture and skin feel.
Sodium hyaluronate is a form of naturally occurring hyaluronic acid, a molecule that can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water. As a result, it can provide a moisturizing effect when applied topically.
1,2-Hexanediol is also a humectant that helps preserve moisture.
Chlorphenesin is a widely used pharmaceutical grade muscle relaxant, although it’s often used in low concentrations as a preservative in cosmetics. Since it’s the second to last ingredient in Lumipearl’s Line Smoothing Moisture Cream, it’s almost certainly present in very low concentrations.
Possible side effects: Although the PEG-12 version comes with some potential concerns, standard dimethicone is generally considered safe, since it can’t penetrate the skin.
Some studies indicate that PEG-100 Stearate may increase the risk of certain types of cancer, including uterine, breast, brain, and leukemia, as well as concerns over developmental and reproductive toxicity, organ toxicity, and irritation.
Truth In Aging notes that low-quality PEG-100 may contain the toxic substance ethylene oxide, while similar quality PEG-75 may contain 1,4-dioxane. Since Guthy-Renker is a worldwide brand (more soon), we'd imagine this isn't something you'd have to worry about.
Finally, chlorphenesin is known to frequently cause irritation and contact dermatitis, especially if you have sensitive or dry skin.
Outside of this, the most common side effect for these ingredients is mild, temporary irritation.
Lifting Eye Repair
Specifically formulated to address dark circles, sagging, and lines and wrinkles around the eye, regardless of skin type. Paraben-free and dermatologist tested:
Water (Aqua), Oleyl Erucate, Glycerin, Dimethicone, Hydrolyzed Hazelnut Protein, Sea Water (Maris Aqua), Cetearyl Alcohol, Steareth-10, Dicetyl Phosphate, Ceteth-20 Phosphate, Sorbitan Stearate, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Phormidium Persicinum Extract, Safflower Oil/Palm Oil Aminopropanediol Esters, Sodium Hyaluronate, Bisabolol, Biosaccharide Gum-4, Calcium Carbonate, Nacre Protein, Nacre Lipids, Ethylhexylglycerin, Hexylene Glycol, Caprylyl Glycol, Cellulose Gum, 1,2-Hexanediol, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Microcrystalline Cellulose, Disodium EDTA, Mica, Sodium Hydroxide, Phenoxyethanol, Chlorphenesin, Benzoic Acid, Fragrance (Parfum)
As with many of Lumipearl’s other formulations, most of these ingredients work as viscosity and skin conditioning agents, surfactants, emollients, thickening agents, emulsifiers, and other common ingredients to help skin retain moisture, while improving the product’s feel.
Lifting Eye Repair contains the same sodium hyaluronate found in the Line Smoothing Moisture Cream, with its ability to hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water.
Possible side effects: Outside of what we’ve covered for Lumipearl’s other formulations bearing the same ingredients, it’s important to point out that Lifting Eye Repair also contains hazelnut protein, which could be problematic for those with nut allergies.
Dark Mark Corrector
A dermatologist-tested cream that uses 2% hydroquinone to gradually diminish the appearance of dark spots:
Inactive Ingredients: Water, octyldodecanol, cyclopentasiloxane, hexylene glycol, polyquaternium-37, glycolic acid, cyclohexasiloxane, cetearyl alcohol, propylene glycol dicaprylate/dicaprate, ascorbyl palmitate, retinyl palmitate, tocopheryl acetate, propylene glycol, glyceryl dilaurate, PPG-1 trideceth-6, glyceryl stearate, PEG-100 stearate, PEG-40 stearate, sodium sulfite, sodium metabisulfite, sodium hydroxide, disodium EDTA, diazolidinyl urea, methylparaben, propylparaben, fragrance
2% hydroquinone is one of the most common ingredients (and concentrations) used in OTC beauty products to lighten dark spots. Why?
Dark spots are simply areas on the skin where melanin (the substance that gives your skin its natural color) has clumped together. It’s the same for freckles.
Once applied to the skin, hydroquinone prevents the enzyme tyrosinase from making melanin. With no new melanin entering the treatment area, the dark spot slowly fades, which can take anywhere from 1-3 months.
Possible side effects: WebMD tells us that the most common side effect associated with hydroquinone is mild burning, stinging, redness, and dryness.
Occasionally, more severe side effects can occur, such as blistering, skin cracking, and blue-black darkening of the skin. Although it’s largely thought to be safe (it’s currently under evaluation by the FDA), many professionals recommend that you avoid using hydroquinone for longer than three months.
Pro tip: Keep in mind that there are many hydroquinone-free formulations on the market, including Beverly Hills MD Dark Spot Corrector and Genucel. You’ll also find several formulations at local retailers and pharmacies.
Purifying Pearl Mask
Purifying Pearl Mask is a 15-minute clay treatment mask that exfoliates skin, removes impurities, and refines pores, tone, and texture.
Water (Aqua), Kaolin, Propylene Glycol, Glycerin, Bentonite, Stearic Acid, Stearoxy Dimethicone, Macadamia Ternifolia Seed Oil, Sea Water (Maris Aqua), C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Phormidium Persicinum Extract, Asparagopsis Armata Extract, Nacre Protein, Nacre Lipids, Cellulose Gum, Caprylyl Glycol, Hexylene Glycol, Ethylhexylglycerin, PEG-5 Soy Sterol, Methylpropanediol, Calcium Carbonate, Quartz, Sodium Hydroxide, Chlorphenesin, Phenoxyethanol, Fragrance (Parfum), Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891)
Kaolin and bentonite are clay minerals with high concentrations of calcium, magnesium, sodium, copper, and potassium, along with others that have little (if any) effect on the skin. When applied to the skin, clay masks may help curb oil production, pull away debris, and temporarily smooth skin.
In contrast to the Phormidium Persicinum we discussed earlier, Purifying Pearl Mask’s Asparagopsis Armata Extract involves a species of red marine algae. We didn’t come across any clinical trials showing its effect on skin.
Possible side effects: Clay masks rarely cause side effects, other than temporary drying or mild redness. If you have especially sensitive skin, though, you might want to check with your dermatologist first.
Perfect & Protect Day Cream Broad Spectrum SPF 25
A daytime moisturizer with a light, silky feel that promises to firm, smooth, and rejuvenate skin. Perfect & Protect also provides broad-spectrum UV protection to help prevent damage and premature aging, regardless of your skin type.
As outlined in Your Guide to Avoiding Sunburn, avobenzone and oxybenzone are very common chemical sunscreen ingredients, although they’re not as effective (or as obvious) as physical sunscreens like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide.
Regardless of the sunscreen you’re using, make sure to reapply frequently throughout the day (an SPF 25 will last you about 125 minutes). Otherwise, you can leave your skin exposed and open to premature aging.
Possible side effects: After absorbing into skin and entering the bloodstream, oxybenzone’s estrogen-like effects can trigger allergic skin reactions. It may also play some role in endometriosis in older women and lower birth weights in newborn girls.
Skin Brightening Cleanser
A creamy pearlescent cleanser that exfoliates and hydrates all skin types for a more radiant glow:
Water (Aqua), Coco-Glucoside, Sodium Lauroamphoacetate, Sodium C14-16 Olefin Sulfonate, Sodium Lauroyl Glycinate, Sea Water (Maris Aqua), Sodium Chloride, Propanediol, Glycol Distearate, Phormidium Persicinum Extract, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Tetrasodium EDTA, Sodium PCA, Styrene/Acrylates Copolymer, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Peel Oil, Glycerin, Nacre Protein, Nacre Lipids, Calcium Carbonate, Ethylhexylglycerin, Hexylene Glycol, Caprylyl Glycol, Propylene Glycol, Sodium Laurate, Sodium Hydroxide, Citric Acid, Phenoxyethanol, Fragrance (Parfum)
All of Skin Brightening Cleanser’s ingredients work as foam-boosting and conditioning agents, surfactants, moisturizers, emollients, preservatives, and other ingredients that affect the product’s consistency and shelf life.
Possible side effects: Outside of mild dryness and temporary redness, there doesn’t seem to be any major side effects associated with these ingredients.

What Do We Know About Lumipearl’s Manufacturer? Can We Learn Anything From Reviews for Their Other Products?
By all appearances, Lumipearl was a brand new product line at the time of our research, since very little online customer feedback was available.
In fact, we only found one review for their Youth Serum on Amazon, who gave it a 5-star rating. They complimented its ability to decrease the appearance of wrinkles, without feeling greasy or sticky.
On the other hand, the Lumipearl line is manufactured by beauty industry powerhouse Guthy-Renker, who’s responsible for massive successes like Wen Hair Care, Meaningful Beauty, Crepe Erase, and Perricone Cold Plasma Sub-D.
According to other third party reviews websites, readers have given these products an average rating of about two stars. Many appear to appreciate the results they provided (improved hair, skin, etc.), although common complaints reference no results, high prices, and negative reactions.
In 2014, the FDA opened an investigation into thousands of complaints claiming that WEN’s products caused clumps of hair to fall out. You can also watch our video review after testing Meaningful Beauty products for two months:
Does this mean you’ll experience any of the same with Lumipearl products? With so little online feedback, and without trying it firsthand, there’s no way to be sure.
However, we think it’s important that you have all the information you need before handing over your credit card number.
How Much Value Will You Get From Lumipearl’s ProPearl Complex?
At between $40 and $60, Lumipearl’s kits promise to address the most common signs of aging across multiple areas of the face. But if a product delivered on its promises, though, you’d probably pay any price, right?
From this perspective, Lumipearl’s formulations appear to contain many of the same ingredients as other anti-aging creams and serums. So, while they might help moisturize your skin and improve its texture, they definitely won’t provide results similar to a visit to your dermatologist’s office.
Additionally, keep in mind that most of Guthy-Renker’s products are endorsed by celebrities, although this doesn’t mean that these celebrities use them, or that you can expect to look like them after using their promoted products.
What about Lumipearl’s ProPearl Complex? The manufacturer doesn’t provide any additional information, but the only related ingredients in any of these formulations are nacre (mother of pearl) protein and lipids—neither of which have much clinical proof related to anti-aging benefits.
On the up side, Lumipearl’s products don’t contain talc (can overdry skin and clog pores), harsh mineral oil, artificial dyes, or paraben (although the FDA indicates there aren’t any health concerns). They also come with a 60-day money back guarantee if you’re not satisfied.
