Clear TV Key is an HD digital antenna that they tout plugs into any television without any “ugly” antennas or “messy” wires and will instantly give you access to broadcast TV shows for free! Clear TV Key promises you’ll have no more expensive cable bills and you’ll be able to enjoy all your favorite programs in crystal clear HD.
What’s the big deal about Clear TV Key?
Clear TV Key Antenna is from Clear TV (see our review here) sold by Tristar Products and boasts that their HD antenna will give you totally free television instantly without any wires or cables. They state you simply stick it on the back of your TV where the cable normally goes and BOOM! Stunning HD TV of all your favorite network channels absolutely free.
These channels include ABC, NBC, CBS, CW, FOX and your local broadcast stations; The company behind Clear TV Key says with their device you can “bypass” cable and satellite and save almost $1000 per year. They encourage you to blow up your cable bill!
Sound too good to be true? Well, It is. Here’s why:
#1 You most likely already have an HD antenna built into your TV, also known as an ATSC Tuner.
When the US switched over from analog to digital broadcasting, the FCC made several mandates, essentially requiring ALL TVs made after 2007 to include a built-in ATSC Tuner so they can automatically receive the new digital signal.
So… if your TV is 2007 or newer you do not need Clear TV Key Antenna.
But here’s another kicker: Clear TV Key might not work with older TVs. The fine print at the bottom of the page states: “MAY REQUIRE TV/DEVICE WITH ATSC TUNER.”
#2 These channels are ALREADY free.
The government requires the Big Five broadcasters (aka ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, and CW) to send their digital signal over the air so that any television set can pick them up. There are also local stations that have their own programming. To find out what free channels are in your area, check out http://antennaweb.org and put in your zip code.
#3 You will NOT get free cable TV!
The subtle pitch of Clear TV Key that Clear TV wants you to believe is that their device will allow you to “bypass cable and satellite” yet still be able to watch your favorite shows. This is true only if your shows happen to be on one of the major free networks as outlined above. Technically Clear TV Key Antenna is not doing anything illegal – they do state in the fine print “Clear TV Key CANNOT RECEIVE CABLE OR SATELLITE SERVICES.” But by encouraging you to “blow up” your cable bill and saying you will save over $10,000 per decade they are implying that you will get the same services as before.
How much is Clear TV Key Antenna to buy?
Clear TV Key is sold for $14.99 plus $6.99 for a total of $21.98. The default order is “Buy One Get One” but they tack on an extra $6.99 for the second Clear TV Key, making the total $28.97 unless you opt for just one.
Clear TV Key Refund Information
Tristar Customer Service: 973-287-5193.
Clear TV Key from Clear TV comes with a 60-day money back guarantee. But this does not include the $6.99 per Clear TV Key and what it costs you to ship it back to them.
Bottom Line: Is Free TV Antenna a great way to watch cable TV for free?
(Sorry, we didn’t mean to shout.)
As we explained above, Free TV from Clear TV will not let you watch Game of Thrones, the Walking Dead, or Game of Walking Dead. In addition, if you have a newer digital TV you do not likely need this device, and even if you have an older TV (pre-2007) you may still need an additional ATSC tuner!
Reviews of Clear TV
Clear TV came out a few years ago with a lot of hype… and resulted in a lot of angry consumers! Over at HighYa, Clear TV receives an average 2-star rating out of over 550 reviews.
The biggest complaint, of course, is that these people thought they were going to be able to “cut the cord” and still be able to watch pay-TV for free.
“This company should be in jail for lying to people and making people think they will get regular channels and some cable channels and HD channel,” writes Pami from Lebanon, OR. Others have similar complaints or say it simply doesn’t work at all.
How to Cut the Cord
There are a lot of people fed up with cable and satellite and there is a growing movement called the Cord Cutters that are looking for ways to watch their favorite shows without paying expensive bills.
