BeQuiet Anti-Snore Chin Strap is a device you wear on your head that the manufacturers tout will stop loud snoring and allow you (and your loved one) a better night’s sleep. They say it fits snugly and comfortably, has no straps that dent your face, and is great for both men and women.
How BeQuiet Works
BeQuiet Anti-Snore Chin Strap claims to be made of a dynamic comfort-flex fabric that is lightweight and breathable. To use BeQuiet, slip over your head when going to sleep; they state that the anti-snore chin strap will bring your jaw forward and close your mouth, eliminating the Zzzzzs by forcing you to breathe through your nose.
Why Do We Snore?
Snoring is a very common problem – according to WebMD it affects around 40% of people, primarily men. It is caused by the vibration of the roof of the mouth as a person lies sleeping on their back and tries to breathe through partially closed or obstructed airways.
Snoring can not only be a nuisance but can also be a sign of bigger problems, including sleep apnea, diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, and heart disease. Sleep apnea is a condition when a person stops breathing for a few moments and then awakens with a large gasp. If you find yourself constantly tired or irritable during the day, you may be suffering from sleep apnea and should consult your doctor.
They claim BeQuiet costs only $10 and if you “buy one you get one” but the fine print reveals that they not only charge you $7.95 in fees for the first BeQuiet Anti-Snore Chin Strap but also charge you another $7.95 for the second one, making the true total $25.90 for 2.
In addition, they state you can upgrade to the Deluxe BeQuiet, which has “more breathable and durable fabric” and comes with a 1-year warranty for $10 per strap, upping the total to $45.90.
Bottom Line: Will BeQuiet Help Me Stop Snoring?
A snoring spouse has caused the disruption of many a marriage or relationship, so it’s no wonder the promise of BeQuiet is tempting. However, there are a few things we should point out.
First, chin straps don’t work for everyone. If you snore with your mouth closed or through your nose (ask your partner) BeQuiet will do little to alleviate the symptoms. If you do have a blocked nasal passage, you should definitely avoid using BeQuiet.
Second, if you do have sleep apnea, you should see a doctor who may indeed recommend a chin strap like BeQuiet along with a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machine, which forces air into the lungs.
If you don’t have sleep apnea, a chin strap such as BeQuiet is one possible remedy; however it should be noted that almost all chin straps on Amazon which seem to be of similar design average about 3 stars.
So what’s one to do? Fortunately, there are some ways to combat snoring without sprays, straps, mouthpieces, nasal strips, or yelling. These include:
- Lose weight! (The #1 reason why people snore)
- Don’t drink a lot of alcohol before bed! (A close second)
- Sleep on your side!
- Sleep with your head slightly elevated.
