Smart Back from Spark Innovators is a brace that they claim instantly adjusts your posture, helps alleviate back pain, and makes you sit up straight at work or at home, indoors or out. They state Smart Back is one size fits all, is discreet, portable, and easy for everyone from seniors to expecting mothers to use to have better posture, eliminating discomfort and pain.
How Does Smart Back Fix My Posture?
Smart Back uses a combination of a padded lower back brace and 2 adjustable straps that fit around your knees. To use Smart Back, they instruct you to have a seat; next, wrap the back brace around your torso and close. Then, take the straps and loop around each of your knees and pull snugly. They claim that this adjustment will automatically make you sit up straight and get rid of any pain.
Smart Back promises this will make you stop slouching and allow you to sit comfortably for hours where before you were in a world of pain. They state you can bring your Smart Back wherever you want to take a sit, be it the office, the living room sofa, or even the ball field while you root on your favorite team. No matter where you are, Smart Back insists you will never need to worry about bad posture or lower back pain again.
What Do They Charge You For a Smart Back Brace?
Smart Back advertises that it’s just $19.99 for a Smart Back back brace and if you buy one you get another one as a bonus; however, if you look at the fine print, you’ll notice that they add $7.99 in fees for each Smart Back, making the actual grand total $35.97 for 2.
Smart Back Money Back Guarantee
If you order Smart Back and you try it and decide it’s not for you, you can get your money back up to 60 days after you receive it. However, this money back guarantee does not include the $15.98 in shipping and handling that they charged you. (You also have to pay to ship Smart Back back!)
Bottom Line: Is Smart Back a “Smart” Way to Fix Your Posture?
At BrightReviews, we’ve seen a lot of different devices that claim to help you stop the slouch. For example, there’s Posture Fix, which wraps around your waist:
Then there’s Royal Posture, a device that slips around your shoulders:
But we’ve never seen a posture adjuster that works quite like Smart Back using straps around your knees!
And while this device certainly is unique, it can hardly be called “discreet” as it can clearly be seen when you are wearing it. Plus, every time you get up, you’re going to have to take it off and re-adjust it. But that’s not why we don’t recommend it… (see below).
How to Have Good Posture
According to a question about posture braces answered by Dr. Weil, the main factor that affects posture is awareness: meaning you have to remind yourself not to slouch. And while a device like Smart Back is so conspicuous as to ensure you will remember, if you follow this postural guide published by UCLA, you can do it yourself at work automatically for free. Steps include:
- Keeping your neck in a neutral position adjusting the monitor so you don’t have move it up or down.
- Maximize the contact of your back to the back of your chair.
- Placing your feet flat on the floor or footrest.
- Keep your elbows at a 100-110 degree angle.
If you are having lower back pain, you should do exercises that will help alleviate it by stretching the muscles. These include lying on your back and bringing your knee to your chest (10 more can be found in this article from Woman’s Day.)
If you have limited mobility due to age or disability, you should consult with your doctor as to a device to wear and/or exercises to perform to get rid of pain. Many practitioners caution against relying on a lower back brace too much as it may actually weaken those muscles over time.
