Cogniflex is a new smart drug that claims it will increase energy and mental alertness that will boost creativity, elevate productivity, and enhance recall. They insist if you take Cogniflex it will not only work to enhance your intelligence but will get even more powerful over time.

What’s in Cogniflex that they say makes it so great for my mental functioning?

Cogniflex is what is known as a “nootropic stack” or group of ingredients that claim to work together to enhance your brain. They are:

Tyrosine
Cogniflex claim: helps you create neurotransmitters that promote mental alterness.
Science says: There is some evidence taking L-Tyrosene helps with alertness especially in highly stressful conditions, but this is really only useful in military situations.

L-Theanine
Cogniflex claim: Prevents over-excitement to maintain focus.
Science says: Some early research shows L-Theanine may make unstressed people feel more relaxed, but doesn’t seem to help people that are already anxious.

Bacopa  Monneri
Cogniflex claim: Increases blood flow and cognitive function.
Science says: According to the Department of Neuroscience at Pitzer College, Bacopa has “immense potential” as a cognitive enhancer, but it is “critical” more research is done.

Rhodiola Rosea
Cogniflex claim: Helps proper functioning of neurotransmitters.
Science says: It may help reduce fatigue, but there is insufficient evidence it improves cognition.

Vinpocetine
Cogniflex claim: Improves brain’s utilization of glucose increasing energy production.
Science says: While it does appear to help with blood flow in the brain, there is inconclusive evidence it helps with memory or dementia.

Huperzine A
Cogniflex claim: Inhibits acetylcholinesterase, the enzyme that breaks down acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter.
Science says: There is some clinical evidence that Huperzine helps with memory and dementia, but the studies are of poor quality and should be interpreted with caution.

Possible side effects of ingredients of Cogniflex: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea.

Conclusion: There is a very small amount of evidence that any of the ingredients will have any effect on your brain, aside from perhaps increasing its blood flow. Even the study Cogniflex cites regarding the effectiveness of Bacopa Monneri over time states that the results may be from a Type I error, or false positive.

(You may also want to read our article about how to put the kibosh on telemarketers and spam.)

Bottom Line: Is Cogniflex a great product that will improve my focus, energy and memory?

No. We say this because of a few reasons.

First, there is little-to-no evidence any of its ingredients work to enhance your smarts. The science of nootropics (or smart drugs) is still inconclusive as to its effects on human beings in real world situations. While CEOs and college students may gobble them up in an effort to get that competitive edge, many merely end up with headaches, insomnia, dizziness or worse.

Second, we don’t like how they sneak in an auto-ship program into your order without your knowledge. These types of programs can be notoriously difficult to cancel or get a refund for, causing many of our readers to call them “scams”.

Third, once they have your information, you could be bombarded with spam or telemarketing phone calls.

Are you interested in nootropics? Let us help you

We have to admit the concept of nootropics is intriguing – I mean, wouldn’t we all want to be able to take a pill and suddenly be a genius? The users of Reddit have created a special forum or subreddit specifically for nootropics where human guinea pigs discuss their experiences as well as share the latest news. There is also a Beginner’s Guide to Nootropics that explores the available evidence that any of them work and like its title suggests is a great place to start.

The main problem we feel with nootropics is there are so many shady companies out there selling products that are not regulated by the FDA that may or may not contain the ingredients listed on the bottle label. That’s why we strongly encourage you to also read our Smart Guide to Buying Smart Drugs where we show you the one CRUCIAL symbol you must look for when buying any supplement.
