Be Aligned from Plymouth Direct is a support pillow you wear around your knee that the manufacturers claim will perfectly adjust your spine, relieving you of back pain and letting you sleep all night long. Be Aligned knee support pillow promises it’s been clinically proven to reduce pain, is made of a breathable fabric, and won’t slip or slide out of place.
What’s so cool about the Be Aligned support pillow?
Be Aligned appears to be a combination pillow and knee sleeve; it is turquoise in color and has a thick pad on one side. In the video, they instruct you to put the support pillow on just like a sock, sliding it up all the way over either knee, with the pad facing inside.
Then, go beddie-bye and sleep on your side. Be Aligned knee support pillow states that because it is attached to your leg, no matter how much you toss or turn, it won’t slide out from between your knees. This in turn will make it easier for you to get comfortable quickly. They add that the knee sleeve is made from breathable fabric and is ultra lightweight.
The main claim of Be Aligned is that using their knee support pillow will perfectly adjust your spine. They state that this is because Be Align will raise your leg to the “critical angle” to relieve pressure on the lower back, legs, and hips. They promise this will help reduce back pain and discomfort both day and night.
Be Aligned cites a clinical study, which they say showed a 64% improvement in back flexibility and sleep quality in the subjects that slept with it. However, since they don’t give any more information about who performed this study and how it was conducted, this is essentially a marketing gimmick. (To learn how to read a clinical study, click here.)
Be Aligned knee support pillow is also heralded by Dr. Paul Kewandowski, DC, a chiropractor who claims to be board certified in sports injuries since 1985. He has just 2 ratings on Healthgrades and averages 3 stars out of 5 for his services.
How much does a Be Aligned knee support pillow cost to buy?
Be Aligned support pillow says it sells for $19.99 and give a special “double offer”, but you should know that they charge you $7.95 in handling per pillow. This makes the true total $35.89 for 2 Be Aligned knee support pillows.
On top of that, Be Aligned has a “premium offer upgrade”, which they claim means a “more breathable and durable fabric” for another $10 per cushion, which ups the price to $55.89 for 2.
Be Aligned states that when you purchase their support pillow you are also signing their arbitration agreement, which prevents you from suing them or joining any class action lawsuit against them.
Is there a money back guarantee for Be Aligned?
Yes, but not for any of the processing and handling. This means they will keep at least $15.90 even if you return your knee support pillows within the 30 days (it’s unclear if the $20 premium upgrade is also refunded and customer service had no more information at the time we called).
Customer service number for Be Aligned: 800-340-3418.
There is no warranty information for Be Aligned knee support pillow.
Bottom Line: Is Be Aligned a great knee support pillow idea to help me sleep and get rid of back pain?
Be Aligned support pillow was still new at the time of this writing so we couldn’t find any reviews from people who actually used it. While we appreciate the novel concept of Be Aligned (basically strapping a pillow to your leg) we don’t like the double handling fees and then the sneaky upgrade charges for the “premium” knee support pillow that basically doubles the price.
Therefore, we do not recommend buying Be Aligned knee support pillow from their website or over the phone. Instead, we suggest waiting until it is available either online from Amazon, Target, etc. where you won’t have to buy 2. Or, better yet, wait until it’s in the “As Seen On TV” aisle at your local retailer. This way, you can give it the “touchy feely” and see if it truly is lightweight and breathable like they promise.
How to reduce back pain while sleeping
Bedtime is a good way to relieve some of the pains in your back, but it really depends on how you sleep. If you are one of the 63% that sleep on your side, putting a pillow (or specialized device like Be Aligned or other knee support pillow) can often do the trick.
If you sleep on your stomach or back, you’ll likely have to try another tactic, as outlined in this slide show from the Mayo Clinic. (Hint: when lying on your back, put a pillow under your knees.)
And of course the firmness and quality of the pillow can also affect your comfort and this can be somewhat subjective. Generally speaking, if you are having back pain, you are going to want a firmer pillow, staying away from down or feathers. Popular support pillows are often made from buckwheat or other natural materials.
Consumers have reviewed a number of other pillow options here on BrightReviews.com. Right now, two of the most popular are the Bambillo pillow (made from bamboo and memory foam) which averages 3 stars, while the WonderFlex Pillow has a perfect 5-star rating.
To find the right pillow for you, consider your sleeping position, as well as if you have any allergies. Look for a manufacturer that has good ratings, a reasonable price, and a warranty (for example Tempur Pedic Memory Foam Pillows come with 3 years, and MyPillow comes with 10).
After all, you’re going to be spending many long nights with it under your head (or between your legs).
